Women in charge o top New Zealand sports teams? Not likely-6
Reasons why there are so few
women coaching at top level
are of plenty. International studies have
identified a long list of
barriers; male control
of sport, a lack of female role models, employers'
unwillingness to hire, lack of recruiting
and mentoring
programs, lesbo-phobia, job
insecurity, low
salaries, gender-based violence, work-life
balance, and the lack of networking or
group practices
to enable women to succeed i
other demanding professions. It is not
surprising the All Blacks or Black Ferns have
never had a female coach. It has
historically been a male
dominated sport, played and
run by males. Similarly the
Silver Ferns have never had a male head coach, as
participation has been predominantly
female,
although men are now getting
involved in the sport, namely
the indoor social scene. New Zealand Rugby's head of
women's rugby, Cate Sexton,
says one key reason why
females don't hold coaching
roles in rugby was because of
other work commitments.-Stuff sport
